Dramatic popularity of automobiles in the 1910s created modern innovations like front engine rear-wheel drive, independent suspension, four-wheel brakes, transmissions, and electric self-starters. Internal combustion engines eventually prevailed over steam and electric. The first Indianapolis 500 was held in 1911. Passenger car sales surpassed 1.5 million in 1915, and in 1918 the first tri-colored stop light appeared in Detroit, Michigan.
