By 1960, one in three Americans owned an automobile. Performance dominated the 1960s with pony and muscle cars laying patches of rubber along the avenues of America. Ford introduced the Mustang in 1964 while Chevrolet responded with the Camaro in 1967. Not to be outdone, Chrysler developed its punishing 426 Hemi capable of pumping out over 500 HP and dropped it into classics like the Charger, GTX, Barracuda and Roadrunner. Even the Japanese got in on the fun with Datsun’s introduction of the 240Z in 1969.
